JULY already. The first few days were hot, with some, but not a lot of progress in the garden. The smaller, late tomato plants are enjoying their paper mulch to help conserve moisture while smothering weeds. They were looking a little puny for awhile, but a couple feasts of Epson salt and blood meal have perked them. I added more papers around the marigolds on July 6. Gardens And Containers Go Hand-In-Hand
Containers permit gardening in small spots. A balcony, front porch or back step or little corner of the yard can become a garden for vegetables and flowers. Food gardening in containers on the balcony or deck can keep the plants and their fruit safe from prowling critters. Our daughter-in-law has a high deck over the walk-out basement. Since the first of June, I've planted the hanging flower boxes. We have them swinging in the breeze at the shop and at the front entry of the house. I fill them with plants that are kept over the winter. I usually have to buy a couple new wax begonias because the winter ones are looking bad. Why have Wax Begonias in the Garden?
